In the photographs above, it can be seen that the bony septal spur formation originating from the nasal septum is in contact with the left lateral wall. It can also be seen that the nasal septum is deviated to the left and the right inferior turbinate is hypertrophic. The patient has both nasal congestion and atypical headache symptoms.

Sometimes a prominent bony protrusions that grow outward from the nose septum. It usually occurs due to previous nasal trauma. It is a called as "bone spur formation / bone spur formation / osteophyte / nose bone spur / nasal bone spur". As seen in the animation above, nasal bone spurs can sometimes cause headaches (Atypical Headache - Contact Point Headaches) by touching the outer turbinate or other areas.

Nasal Bone Spur Diagnosis

The following applications and methods can be used to diagnose nasal septal spur:

- Diagnosis can be made by evaluating the back side of the septum during rhinoscopic examination.
- Diagnosis can be made by seeing during endoscopic examination
- Diagnosis can be made by seeing paranasal sinus tomography or incidentally taken head and neck and cranial MRI.

How can it be understood that atypical headache is caused by nasal bone spur?

If bone spur formation is detected during endoscopic examination and there are atypical headache symptoms, the following procedures can be performed to determine whether this pain is caused by nasal septal spur:

- Pain decreases when lidocaine or marcaine is injected into the areas where the spur contacts.
- If cotton impregnated with lidocaine is placed between the bone spur and the lateral wall, the pain decreases.

Before surgery, it can be thought that these pains occur due to spur formation.

Treatment of Nasal Bone Spur

In treatment, spur removal may be performed as part of a simple septoplasty operation. It can be performed as submucosal resection with closed technique or endoscopic septal spur removal. Especially in septal spurs close to the anterior part of the septum, reduction and treatment can be performed by shaving the spur with the help of a microdrill. For experienced ENT physicians, septal spur removal can easily be performed as part of a standard septum deviation operation.

Apart from these, if nasal septal spur removal is performed as part of the septopalsty operation, the same conclusion can be reached if the pain decreases.

In patients with bone spur formation, spur flour extraction is sufficient for treatment during septoplasty operation. In this way the patient is simultaneously both a reduction in nasal obstruction probşmes with migraine headaches can be seen in the reduction or complete disappearance.

In patients who have complaints of headache after nasal bone spur removal, the underlying cause can be migraine or tension headache causing headache other than spur. Severe decreases in headache complaints occur in all patients, usually after nasal septal spur removal. The spore formation marked in the above-mentioned tomography images can be seen after the resection during the operation of the septoplasty. This spur, which is triangular and bony, caused a painful contact point and headache in the nose. Postoperative pain relief was seen in the headache of the patient 👍.

Patient Care Recommendations After Septal Spur Removal Operation

After undergoing a septal spur removal operation, it's important to follow post-operative care recommendations to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Septal spur removal is typically performed to correct issues with the nasal septum, which can affect breathing and overall nasal function. Here are some general patient care recommendations after this procedure:

Follow Your Surgeon's Instructions: The most important step is to follow the specific post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. They may have individualized recommendations based on your procedure and medical history.

Pain Management: You may experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed, and follow the recommended dosages. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen may also be recommended, but check with your surgeon first.

Nasal Packing: In some cases, nasal packing may be used to control bleeding and support the healing process. If this is the case, follow your surgeon's instructions regarding the care and removal of the packing. I generally prefer to use an internal silicone splint to stay in the nose for about 7 days after the operation.

Nasal Care: Keep the inside of your nose clean and moist. Your surgeon may recommend saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation to help keep the nasal passages clear of mucus and crusting.

Rest: Rest is essential for the healing process. Avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects for the first few weeks after surgery. Elevating your head while sleeping can also help reduce swelling and improve breathing.

Bleeding: Some minor bleeding is normal after the surgery. If you experience significant or continuous bleeding, contact your surgeon immediately.

Swelling: Swelling is common and can be managed with cold compresses on the outside of your nose. Generally, serious swelling does not occur around the face and nose. There may be a slightly wide appearance at the tip of the nose caused by silicone splints. When the splints are removed, the nose shape returns completely to normal. A nose bandage or splint that is visible from the outside is not used.

Avoid Nasal Trauma: Be gentle with your nose and avoid any activities or situations that might lead to nasal trauma, such as blowing your nose forcefully or engaging in contact sports.

Diet: Maintain a soft diet for the first few days, as chewing may cause discomfort and movement of the upper jaw. Cold, soft foods like yogurt, ice cream, and smoothies can be soothing.

Medications: Be cautious about using certain medications, especially those that can thin the blood (e.g., aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Consult your surgeon about which medications are safe to use during your recovery.

Follow-up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They will monitor your healing progress and make any necessary adjustments to your care plan.

Smoking and Alcohol: Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, as they can impair the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

Patience: Healing takes time, and it's important to be patient with the process. It may take several weeks to see the full benefits of the surgery.

Always consult with your surgeon about any concerns or questions you have during your recovery. It's crucial to communicate any unusual symptoms or issues to ensure the best possible outcome after septal spur removal surgery.
