Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie Release Operation

Piston Type Ankyloglossia

The anterior tongue ties can sometimes adhere to the lower gingival or lower alveolar ridge area in two or three bundles, and in this case the appearance of the Eiffel Tower can be seen from the front. Because language ties are similar in appearance to the Eiffel Tower, such language ties can be called "Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie".

Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie (Piston Type Tongue Tie)
As this is removed, tongue-tied bundles of tongue bonds cause a piston effect, causing an increasing difficulty at the tip of the tongue. For this reason, it is also called "Piston Type Tongue Tie". In such tongue ties, it is appropriate to cut off the part of the tongue near the teeth when the tongue is cut off for therapeutic purposes.

I drew the animation on the side a little simple and as you can see in this drawing, the tongue tie piece on the top is in a single bundle, and the piece on the bottom is connected to the lower gum line in several bundles. In the part in between, the openings of the submandibular gland's duct (Wharton's duct) into the mouth are seen.

A slight bifurcation at the tip of the tongue is also seen. Structural changes that may occur in the tongue may vary according to the tension and placement of the tongue tie. Sometimes, if the lower part of the tongue tie sticks to the gingiva excessively, gingival recession and backward notching of the lower jaw can be seen when viewed from the side (source >> A lingual mucogingival problem associated with ankyloglossia: a case report).

What is the Functional Difference of Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie from Other Lingual Frenulum Types?

What I share with you here is that the Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie, which is a different type of tongue tie, causes increasing tension and pulling force when the tongue is raised, and unlike other tongue types, it can cause a much stronger restriction at the tip of the tongue, especially during fast speech. . The "piston effect" here may vary depending on the placement and tension of this tongue tie.

What Are the Symptoms of Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Tie?

Apart from the classic Ankyloglossia symptoms, it does not have any different and special symptoms. It was only in the case of a rapid tongue tip rise that it could cause a firmer fixative effect. For this reason, there may be articulation disorder that becomes evident when talking fast, this is more evident in tongue ties located close to the tip of the tongue.

Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Diagnosis

Diagnosis can be made by raising the tongue upwards, seeing the sublingual, and after a simple manual examination.

Eiffel Tower Type Tongue Treatment

As in classical tongue tie operations, surgery can be planned in patients with swallowing and speech problems due to ankyloglossia and structural changes in the tongue. During surgery, tongue tie bundles, which are close to the lower gums, can also be cut. Treatment is not necessary in asymptomatic Eiffel Tower Type Tongue.
