Posterior tongue ties are sometimes invisible and submucosal (type IV tongue tie, type 4 tongue tie, submucosal tongue tie / posterior tongue tie).

For posterior tongue tie examination, the middle part of the tongue is lifted up over the patient's head by inserting both index finger under the tongue. Tongue tie is understood as submucosal to the middle line. This tongue tie types causes especially malnutrition in infants. It is the tongue tie type that misunderstanding the most. Incorrect phrase "tongue shortened" is confused with.
