How to cleanse your nasal passages post deviated septum surgery for optimal healing and care inside your nose?

The Importance of Post-Septoplasty Care

While septoplasty is a common and relatively safe procedure, it still involves surgical intervention, which requires diligent post-operative care. Proper care ensures a smooth and complication-free recovery process. One essential aspect of this care is nasal cleansing.

Nasal Cleansing After Septoplasty

Nasal cleansing involves cleaning and maintaining the nasal passages to prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and promote optimal healing. This process is particularly important following septoplasty due to the potential for post-operative congestion, swelling, and the presence of sutures or splints.

Methods of Nasal Cleansing

There are several methods you can use to cleanse your nasal passages after septoplasty surgery:

Saline Nasal Sprays: Saline nasal sprays are readily available over-the-counter and are a gentle way to keep your nasal passages moist. They help flush out mucus and debris, providing relief from dryness and congestion.

Nasal Irrigation: Nasal irrigation, often done with a Neti pot or a saline nasal rinse bottle, involves a more thorough cleansing of the nasal passages. It can be especially helpful in removing post-operative crusts or dried blood. Ensure the solution is sterile and follow your surgeon's instructions for proper technique.

Avoid Irritants: During the healing process, avoid irritants such as smoking and exposure to pollutants, which can aggravate your nasal passages.

Prescribed Medications: Your surgeon may prescribe specific medications, like nasal steroids or antibiotics, to facilitate the healing process. Be sure to follow their instructions meticulously.

Creating a Nasal Cleansing Routine

To make the most of your post-septoplasty care, establish a daily routine that includes nasal cleansing:

Consult Your Surgeon: Always follow your surgeon's guidance. They will provide specific instructions for your recovery.

Choose the Right Products: Select high-quality saline solutions, nasal sprays, or irrigation devices. Ensure they are sterile and free from additives that might cause irritation.

Maintain Consistency: Stick to a regular schedule for nasal cleansing. This consistency will help reduce the risk of complications and expedite healing.

Proper Technique: Learn and implement the correct techniques for nasal irrigation or saline spray usage to avoid discomfort or complications.

Monitor Your Progress: Pay attention to how your nasal passages are healing. If you notice any unexpected symptoms or changes, contact your surgeon promptly.

With the septoplasty operation, usually radiofrequency turbinate reduction is performed. During these procedures, mucosal damage usually occurs in varying quantities, and at the same time, there is a decrease in the activity of secretory glands in the nose. I would like to suggest the following for my patients, nose care and nose cleaning after deviation surgery:

➤ Use pre-packed pressurized ocean or sea water spray for intranasal cleaning for the first 3 weeks after the Septoplasty operation
➤ After completion of the third week after the surgery, you can apply salt water from the tap water (1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon salt, half a teaspoon of carbonate) into the glass or sinus rinse. Patients who are particularly satisfied with sprey and who do not force financial opportunities can continue to be treated
➤ The first 10 days of post-operative bleeding is the highest risk, and the use of manufactured ocean water spray for pressure blast or high pressure shell cleansing is not appropriate.
➤ Please do not use materials such as fingers, paper towels, napkins or selpak wipes for nose cleaning after Septoplasty (especially in the first 2 months). Thus, as you increase the loss of nasal mucosa, you may also cause infections
➤ After the 2nd or 3rd week after the surgery, you can close the nostril and gently lift it forward by pushing it forward.
➤ Instructions for using a spray for cleaning the nose for the first 3 weeks after the operation of the Septoplasty >> Go to the toilet, tilt your head forward, gently place the tip of the spray into the front of the nose tip, then press with your sprayer thumb. You can breathe gently through the spore while you squeeze it, and you can end the spraying when you feel the salt water is reaching your nose. Generally, in the early postoperative periods, the salt water principle coincides with clotting and nasal secretions. After that, you can slowly consume salty water, clots and secretions from the back into the sink. You can do the same with the other nostril. Silicone splints remain in the nose for 7 to 10 days, usually after a deviation surgery. During this time you can clean the holes in the silicones in the same way. I usually recommend moisturizing drops, then spraying and then dropping, and these applications will be explained in detail to you.
➤ After 3 weeks after the operation of the Septoplasty, you can prepare and use tap water and salt water as described above, in addition to the spray for nasal cleaning.

What is the proper way to cleanse the inside of your nasal passages following surgery for a deviated septum?

Above photographs, there are photos of endoscopic examination of the same patient who underwent septoplasty + radiofrequency turbinate reduction surgery. At the top of these photographs in week 2, the bleeding area in the septum near the tip of the nose and the small amount of crusts on the nose are remarkable. This hemorrhagic area in the right frontal area of the septum is the damaged mucosal area, which is the end result of cleaning with a paper towel. The intranasal mucosa is generally dry. It is suggested to increase the frequency of use of the patient's moisturizing drop, clean the nose with only salt water and terminate the paper towel contact.

When regular care is usually completed by the second week after nasal surgery, patients notice a significant degree of relief from preoperative and postoperative nasal breathing. It is very important for the nose to remain moist and oily after the septoplasty operation.

Nasal cleansing after septoplasty operation is a critical aspect of your recovery. By following a well-structured post-operative care routine, you can ensure that your nasal passages heal correctly and you can enjoy the full benefits of the surgery. Always consult your surgeon for personalized guidance and adhere to their recommendations to promote a healthy, comfortable, and complication-free recovery. Your improved nasal health and well-being are well worth the effort.
