How to Reduce Swelling With Cold Application After Rhinoplasty

Apply a cold compress after rhinoplasty?

After the nose aesthetic operation, the head of the patient's bed is increased from the waist to increase the level of the heart and blood pressure in the head is reduced by reducing blood leakage and bruising can be reduced. In addition, many clinics recommend cold application as standard after nose surgery. In hospitals with a modern cold treatment tool, the Hilotherapy System, this device can be applied to the facial area in a practical way. In hospitals where this device is not available, I prefer to apply 45 min cold application and 15 min break to the nose sides by putting ice into two disposible gloves or using cooling gels. There are discussions about these periods.

Hilotherapy System

Cold application after rhinoplasty surgery is effective in reducing bleeding, bruising and pain. The ideal is that the cold application is about 15-20 degrees. Application at temperatures of zero degrees and below may cause adverse effects on wound healing, since tissue feeding is impaired. The Hilotherapy System is a system through which the water constantly passes through the honeycomb face mask, producing water at constant temperature, such as the boiler and honeycomb system in our house. Post-operative bruising is more effective on nose bleeding and pain than classical cold application methods.

As shown in the photograph, cooling gels can be used in the form of glasses or in the form of a face mask. However, it cannot come into contact with nose edges, pouches or gloves as in ice.

Walking in Cool Weather is Also Effective!

After the surgery, staying in a cool environment, sitting in the supine position, as well as walking in cool weather are beneficial. I usually recommend my patients to walk early in the morning and late in the evening. In this way, walking in cold environments without increasing blood pressure and having cool wind on the face are very beneficial in reducing edema and bruising.

If You Don't Have Air Conditioning in Your Home, Avoid Rhinoplasty in Summer!

If you have air conditioning in your home, you can set the room temperature at a constant 20 degrees Celsius. If your home does not have air conditioning, you can lower the temperature inside the house by a few degrees by opening the windows and drawing the curtains that reduce the penetration of sunlight. However, since the temperature is very high in Istanbul in August, I avoid rhinoplasty surgery as much as possible.

What temperature is ideal for cold application after rhinoplasty?

Ideally, 15-20 degrees cold application is effective in reducing edema and bruising in patients without excessively reducing circulation and negatively affecting healing. Applying a cold treatment at just zero degrees, that is, ice temperature, can cause a serious decrease in circulation and a negative impact on healing in the long term. When applying ice, the cold application starts at zero degrees and gradually increases as the ice melts, reaching 15-20 degrees.
