How Can Upper Lip Ties Cause Tooth Separation (Diastema) and Tooth Decay?

Tooth Separation (Diastema), Tooth Decay and Upper Lip Tie

When the upper lip ties pass through the teeth and reach the hard palate, it is classified as Class 4 lip ties. Anatomically, it is the most tightly adherent type of lip ligaments, so that the upper lip is lifted forward from the gums and the expected effect of fixation of the lip is highest. I have already written an article on the Kotlow upper lip ligament classification, and in this article you can find out how the lips are classified by degree >> Kotlow Üst Dudak Bağı Sınıflandırılması, Coryllos Dil Bağı ...

A class of 4 ULTs is not a "worse" than a class 3 ULT - the degree of limitation is important. This degree of restriction can be determined by sensing the lip and trying to amplify it by imitating the flange movement needed in the breast. Alternatively, an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant) can assess what the lip is doing on the breast.

In babies with class 4 lips, depending on the fact that the lip cannot be removed by placing the lip on the outermost areola of the breast; breastfeeding problems such as breastfeeding problems, inadequate weight gain, mother nipple problems, gas yuta may occur. In other words, class 4 lip ties negatively affect the baby's latching or grip ability.

How does the upper lip mount facilitate tooth decay?

A good information highlighted in this article "In breastfeeding babies, the abnormal attachment of maxillary brake has the potential to be an important factor in contributing to the formation of facial caries in the maxillary anterior teeth. is due to the inability to remove the remaining milk from the area ". In other words, because the babies cannot separate their lips from their upper teeth, milk accumulates between the teeth and the lips, causing premature decay in the teeth. The most likely mechanism of this early deterioration is that a significant braking would allow uncleaned residues to enter the pocket, giving a material reservoir for use with bacteria. In particular, class 3 and 4 lip ties can facilitate tooth decay with this mechanism.

In older children, if the lip ties are present, brushing between the teeth and the lips during tooth brushing can negatively affect tooth cleaning and cause tooth decay to be easier.

How can the upper lip tie casue the gap between the teeth (diastema)?

There is controversy about the separation of lip ties in the teeth. When evaluating the upper lip ties, the amount of lip tie removal from the gingiva should be assessed, whether the lip tie is thick and tightly attached, and whether it causes pitting or notching in the gum line. Normally, if it does not cause breastfeeding, it is best to expect the baby's tooth development to be completed. In some lip tied infants, the gap between the upper teeth can be closed spontaneously.

Separation of teeth in patiens with lip tie that causing pitting in the gingiva line

Particularly in babies who have notching in the gum line, it is most likely that there will be separation (gap - gap) between the upper teeth. In the babies whose lip tie reaches to the hard palate and notching in the gingiva line, breast feeding problem is possible in early period.

The separation between the teeth (diastema) can be also seen in patients with normal labial frenulum!

Regardless, it is important to understand that both the lip ligament and the normal labial brake can create a gap between the teeth. Even if this tissue is not under tension, the presence of tissue that can cause space is sufficient.

Dr. The fact that the gates between the teeth of the normal braking and tongue ties can be seen by the Ghari remains open in the form of an automatic closing of the elevator doors.

Dr. The fact that the garnet was separated by the Ghari in the normal braking and tongue ties, and the automatic closing hatch doors were left open, was described in the article as "The Difference Between a Lip Tie and a Normal Labial Frenulum".

"A normal frenulum can act as a spacer between the teeth and may cause a gap, such as elevator doors close to you. Only the presence of a tissue (such as placing a foot between the doors) can separate the teeth. In order to keep the doors open, one has added tension to keep the teeth apart (such as a person using his hands to open the elevator doors, opening the elevator doors with the help of a power), both a normal brake and a lip tie, which can cause a gap in the teeth".

Lip tie release surgery is not always sufficient for the closure of teeth!

It is important for families to understand that releasing a lip tie that may causes a gap does not lead to the closure of this gap. The tooth gap is much more complex than the simple presence or absence of a low brake. It is sufficient to know that if the parents wish to "release" the braces, it is not a guarantee for abnormal causes of the variable intervals.

In the process of cutting the lip tie tissue for breastfeeding problmes in babies  is not inclue the removal of tissue between the teeth!

In small babies, the lip ties are cut parallel to the gingiva in the process of lip tie release surgery. In this way, it is possible to move the lip forward again. The removal of the tissue between the upper teeth can be performed surgically but not frequently.
