Treatment Success in Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome!

Success of sleep apnea and snoring treatments - How is obstructive sleep apnea treated? - Obstructive sleep apnea treatment - Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Treatment - Treatments for snoring - Treatment of snoring

Snoring is the sound of vibration that occurs due to the contraction of the airways in the upper respiratory tract.

Sleep apnea means that sleep breathing stops for more than 10 seconds. If breathing is exerted, obstructive sleep apnea (ie due to the closure of the airways) is referred to as a central sleep apnea if there is no respiratory effort. As the airways narrow, complaints such as tired awakening, drowsiness, sore throat and daytime sleepiness occur. You can watch a nice animation video for sleep apnea and snoring below.

Sleep apnea and snoring are actually the leading symptoms of another leading to the same problems. The patient begins to snore as the airway narrows due to relaxation during sleep. As the relaxation reaches the maximum, the air passage closes, ie "collapse", and sleep apnea begins to appear.

When the number of hours of sleep apnea is more than 5, this condition is called "Sleep Apnea Syndrome". Sleep apnea is classified as mild to moderate and severe sleep apnea according to the number of apneas occurring per hour.

Treatment success depends on correct detection of collapse regions in the airways and opening of these regions.

General Treatment Principles For Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Snoring:

Precautions for Patients

- Increasing weight control and exercise to reduce fats in the neck area to prevent contraction in airways
- Ending habits and drugs that will increase the relaxation of the airway (termination of smoking and alcohol use, antidepressant medication, muscle relaxant and other medication that may affect the muscle tone)
- Regular walking, swimming or running to increase the body's stress resistance and break the insulin resistance
- Mediterranean style nutrition

The Role of ENT Specialists in Treatment

ENT specialists are involved in accurate detection of closure sites in the airway and operations in these regions.

Tonsil hypertrophy and soft palate sagging are the most common causes of airway obstruction.

The definitive diagnosis of the disease is made by sleep test (polysomnography) with sleep endoscopy. Each patient is evaluated separately and the nose and throat paths are evaluated. Special snoring is planned for the patient. Apart from these treatments, many procedures such as intra oral prostheses, jaw advancement operations, throat hanging surgeries, tongue root surgeries, pillar implant and hypoglossal nerve stimulator were defined for snoring and sleep apnea.

Patients with snoring or sleep apnea also have nasal obstruction; septoplasty surgery, turbinate reeucition with radiofrequency or nasal tip lifting surgery can be done with oral sleep apnea surgeries.

The subject is quite different and there are thousands of information available. If you suspect snoring or sleep apnea syndrome, it is best for you to be examined by a ent doctor.
