The Incidence of HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Cancer Is Increasing!

Increasing Incidence rates of HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Germany

The prevalence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is increasing all over the world and I would like to share with you the results of a new scientific study published on HPV-related oral cancers.

Increased incidence of head and neck cancers and increased rates of human papilloma virus (HPV) have been reported in international studies.

In the cohort of consecutive patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), the researchers focused on the association of human papillomavirus (HPV) and the incidence rates in Giessen, Germany from 2000 to 2017. They also compared the findings with the regional (Giessen and Hessen federal), national (Germany) and international (US) databases. In general, the incidence of oropharyngeal cancers, as well as tonsils and oropharynx (sub-regions) HPV-related cancers were found to be significantly higher. In Germany and the USA, a significant increase was evident. In Germany, the incidence rates of OPSCC increased significantly, corresponding to the known incidence increase of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers based on experimental data from cohort patients of consecutive authors.

According to the study results, the incidence of tonsils and oropharynx HPV-related cancers may be attributed mainly to male patients in the US population, while the increase in the incidence of OPSCC in Germany is more correlated with women. In Germany, a significant increase in the incidence rates of OPSCC in Germany, corresponding to an increase in the incidence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers, was emphasized based on the experimental data obtained from our consecutive cohort patients.
