Balloon Sinuplasty - How To Perform?

Balloon Sinuplasty is the process of opening the sinus discharge ports with the help of balloon catheters. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. There are sinus openings with the help of illuminated guide catheters.

Catheters of different sizes, flushing systems and balloons are available for different sinuses. In new balloon applications, instead of radiation-containing fluoroscopy instrument, transsinus illumination technique is generally used. Once the light-enhanced guide catheters are inserted into the sinus, the position of the wire is determined in the dark environment.

Available from balloon catheters for different sinuses. Since the sinus drainage pathways are devious and indented, there are different angled instruments and balloon catheters for insertion of the catheters. In this system developed for the treatment of sinusitis with balloon, no additional surgical incision or tissue is made through the nose. Since it is aimed to provide the most effective relaxation with minimum tissue damage; only the sinus mouths are enlarged and the contents of the sinuses are emptied and the symptoms of sinusitis are eliminated.

Balloon Sinuplasty can be performed under office conditions and under local anesthesia!

Balloon Sinuplasty procedures are performed under office conditions and under local anesthesia. Under these conditions, all sinuses are easily accessible. Therefore, I usually prefer to apply in hospital operating room conditions.

Above is the animation video of Balloon Sinuplasty procedure.

Why was Balloon Sinuplasty developed?

In patients with chronic sinusitis, the "Balloon Synuplasty Procedure" has been developed with the aim of extending the sinus drainage pathways with balloon assisted catheters without any anatomical changes.

Illuminated guide wires are used to find sinus ports using wire guides, which are then inserted into the sinus ports by inserting balloon catheters. As the balloons are inflated, the sinus mouths expand. In this system, which has been developed for devious sinus discharge areas, fluoroscopy device with radiation in some sinuses can also be used to insert balloon catheters.

In this system, washing apparatuses of different sizes and angles have been developed for washing the sinuses after reaching the sinus openings. Likewise, different size balloon catheters are developed for different sinuses.

New Balloon systems use  illuminated guides Instead of radiation!

In the new balloon systems, wire guides are used in the above photo, with increased light power. Thanks to this light system, it is possible to determine the sinus of the guide after the operating room lights are turned off.

Treatment of chronic sinusitis made easy with "Balloon Sinuplasty"!

"Balloon Sinuplasty" is the procedure of expanding the sinus emptying pathways without surgical incision by the application of balloon catheter only through the nose. In this procedure, the patient's sinus and intranasal anatomy are not significantly altered. Clinical studies show that the symptoms of sinusitis (facial pain, pressure and fullness hissi) disappear long-term after balloon sinoplasty surgery.

Different Features of New Balloon Systems Available!

In new balloon systems, luminous catheters are used instead of instruments containing radiation. However, instruments for aspirating the sinus content from different directions, instruments for washing the sinus, and balloons with three folds as shown in the figure above have been developed. Risks of Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure?

Balloon Sinuplasty has been accepted by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an alternative to functional endoscopic sinus surgery and with low probability of health-related risk-complications.

It is not particularly suitable in patients with severe nasal septum deviation and severe sinus disease, and in pediatric patients.

Complications reported after the balloon sinuplasty procedure are especially inferior turbinate lateralization (pushing the inferior turbinate outward) and orbital complications. The probability of complications has been reported to be very low.

Apart from these complications, mucosal damage, infection, hemorrhage and rarely brain damage can be seen.

Balloon Sinuplasty can be performed with functional endoscopic sinus surgery

The Balloon Sinuplasty procedure can be used as an alternative to endoscopic sinus surgery alone or in some cases in combination with functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

Balloon Sinuplasty is a reliable treatment method!

Balloon Sinuplasty procedure is a reliable and effective treatment protocol with various comprehensive studies. More information on the subject can be found in the following source links.

Advantages of Balloon Sinuplasty

Sinusitis - Headache

Balloon Sinuplasty is effective in eliminating or alleviating many complaints and adverse health effects due to sinusitis. Some of these complaints and adverse health effects are listed as follows:

- Medical treatment resistant attacks of sinusitis
- Headaches around the eyes
- Breath smell and bad taste in the mouth
- Nasal congestion
- Nasal and runny nose

The recovery time after the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure is shorter than other methods!

Balloon Sinuplasty procedure, tissue removal or incision is not made after the procedure, bleeding and crusting is less; recovery time is shorter than classical surgical procedures. Therefore, patients can return to work and work environment in less time.

Soft tissue or bone resection is not performed in the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure!

In the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure, surgical tissue removal or incision is not made for bone and soft tissue forming the nasal and sinus cavities. There is no significant change in the existing anatomical structure.

Cost of Balloon Sinuplasty in Istanbul

The Balloon Sinuplasty procedure costs $ 1500 - 2000 us over normal endoscopic sinusitis surgery. The analysis, materials and operating room usage costs of the hospital where the procedure is performed are added as additional fees.
Balloon sinoplasty surgery reduces the symptoms of sinusitis in a short time and reduces the number of recurrent sinusitis attacks. When the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure alone is performed, prices varying according to hospitals (2500 - 4000 Us Dollars - 1 day hospital stay, including all assays, instruments and doctor fees) may arise.

This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat sinusitis without any tissue excision or surgical incision in the patient's nose.

Is Balloon Sinuplasty procedure covered by the health insurances?

Balloon Sinuplasty procedure is covered by private insurance if there are no special conditions for the patient's policy. After the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure, patients' complaints and the amount of drugs they use due to sinusitis attacks decrease.

Patient Care After Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

After the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure, no special drug use and approach is required, which is different from other sinusitis surgeries. However, intranasal cortisone and antibiotics may be used to prevent excessive mucosal edema and infection after opening the canals with pressurized balloons. Spraying ocean water into the nose and simple painkillers may also be useful. There is no special nutrition diet after the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure. Only excessive hot foods near the face can increase the risk of bleeding.

Sinusitis
The first 1 week after the procedure can increase the blood pressure to work in sports activities and work, taking a shower with excessive hot water may increase the risk of bleeding.

After the balloon sinuplasty procedure, symptoms of sinusitis are reduced. Since bone and soft tissue resection is not performed in this procedure, postoperative pain, bleeding, nasal congestion and crusting are seen less than other sinusitis surgeries. Properly selected patients have good results.
