The patient who underwent open technique rhinoplasty 2 weeks ago applied because of red, itchy areas on the tip of the nose and upwards as seen in the photo, which started after using antibiotic skin pomade containing mupirocin. The patient stated that this skin reaction occurred on the tip of the nose after using the pomade that covered the outside of the retainer while using a nostril retainer. The patient's skin pomade use was discontinued. The patient did not have any tape or other product that he contacted on the tip of the nose other than this pomade. The patient was recommended a cream containing cortisone, an oral antihistamine tablet and a single dose of steroid treatment for treatment purposes. Follow-up is planned.

Sometimes when tape is applied from the nose to the cheeks, similar skin irritation can occur on the cheeks and nose. Although hypoallergenic tapes (such as 3M Brown Paper Tape) are generally used; some patients have high skin sensitivity and reactions may occur. After rhinoplasty, a herpes infection can sometimes cause similar red and crusty lesions. However, typical vesicular lesions can be seen with a herpes infection.

What is Contact Dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when the skin comes into direct contact with an irritant or allergen. It can cause redness, itching, swelling, and discomfort. After cosmetic surgery such as rhinoplasty, the sensitive skin on the nose can become more vulnerable to a variety of external factors, including cosmetic products such as ointments. Sometimes, the use of tape or medical silicone nostril retainers can also cause contact dermatitis.

Causes of Contact Dermatitis on the Nose After Rhinoplasty

After rhinoplasty surgery, patients often use ointments or ointments to aid healing or to moisturize the skin. However, certain ingredients in these products can trigger an allergic or irritating reaction. Tape, retainers, and similar products that come into contact with the tip of the nose can also cause irritation to the skin on the nose. The sensitive skin on the tip of the nose is especially prone to irritation during the healing process.
