How To Make Nose Saline Rinse at Home

How To Lavage The Nose With Salt Water?

Nasal Irrigation With Natural Salt Water at Home

Nasal lavage with salty water (washing the nose with saltwater or nasal saline rinse) the nose with saline water is a useful application that should be done in many different situations and when done correctly, without side effects.

In which cases it may be necessary to lavage the nose with saline water?

◊ In the treatment of dry nose
◊ As an adjunct to treatment in influenza upper respiratory tract infections
◊ To reduce contamination in viral upper respiratory tract infections
◊ For protection and cleaning purposes in swine flu infection
◊ In the treatment of chronic sinusitis and acute sinusitis
◊ It is beneficial to lavage the nose with saline water in order to accelerate the recovery and cleanse the crusts after nasal curvature, nasal concha and sinusitis surgeries.

The benefits of lavage the nose with salt water can be summarized as follows

◊ Removal of scab, allergens and bacteria in the nose (there are sources that announce washing the nose with ocean waters after hand washing after the swine flu epidemic as the most important measure against the swine flu epidemic)
◊ Nutrition of nasal mucosa and increasing ciliary movements
◊ Removal of bacterial plaques on the nasal mucosa
◊ Reducing the nasal meats thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties of salt
◊ Removing allergy mediators in the nose
◊ Cleaning the sinus mouths

Lavage of the nose with salt water can be done in 3 ways:

1. Using sprays containing ocean waters
2.Using Sinus Rinse
3.Using home-prepared salt water

Things to consider when using ocean water sprays:

The area where saline water should be applied into the nose should cover the area where the sinus mouths are as shown in the figure and then the saline water should reach the nasal passage.

Especially if the ocean water is to be washed in the nose with sprays, the head should be tilted forward at the sink and the spray should be pushed towards the specified area.

Things to consider when using Sinus Rinse

What should be considered in lavage methods such as Sinus Rinse and Neti Pot, which are sent through a nostril and where the water is removed from the other nostril and the nose is washed very effectively, can be summarized as follows:

◊ The mouth should be kept open while using Sinus Rinse.
◊ The procedure should be terminated as soon as there is an ear pain.
Nasal lavage with Sinus Rinse should never be done without consulting a doctor after middle ear inflammation, nose surgery and ear surgery.
◊ Since it is thought that amoebas and microbes like Naegleria Fowleri that can reproduce in still water can adhere to the inside of the application bottle and other bacteria that can cause sinusitis, adhere to the surface of the nostril of the bottle, each application bottle should not be used for longer than 1 month and the bottle should be washed with hot detergent water after each application. It is beneficial to use the water that has been cooled to boil.

Things to consider in preparing saline for nasal lavage at home

A practical method to prepare saline for nasal lavage is to mix a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. The water prepared in this way can be pulled from the nose towards the nasal, with the head tilted forward, and can be removed back with a blowing motion or it can be applied with a Sinus Rinse bottle.

Apart from these, since the nasal mucosa is very delicate, especially in babies under 2 years of age, in case of nasal discharge and nasal congestion, saline water is dropped from the nostrils by using saline drops ("monodose" tubes) into the nose instead of the above procedures.
