Maximal Cartilage Resection Area in Closed Septoplasty Operation
Positive Health Effects of Septoplasty Operation
After septoplasty operation, a decrease in the intranasal airway resistance occurs and the amount of air taken by the patient from the nose increases. Generally, patients notice the relief of nasal breathing as soon as the silicone splints or other buffers in the nose are removed. Following successful deviation surgery, the following positive health effects can occur:
- A decrease in the feeling of dryness in the throat when sleeping with open mouth or in the morning
- Decrease in sleep apnea symptoms and increase in sleep quality
- Increase in exercise capacity (increase in running distance)
Reduced throat dryness and gum disease
- Decrease in stress hormones secreted at night and decrease in the patient's symptoms such as sweating during sleep, waking up tired, waking up with a bitter taste in the mouth
- Decrease in the frequency of lower respiratory tract infections and sinus infections
Septoplasty operation is an operation performed to correct the curvatures in the septum that divides the nasal cavity into two. Deviation surgery is planned, especially if there are complaints such as nasal congestion, open mouth sleep, snoring, dry mouth at night and sweating. Our nose is like a special machine that warms, purifies and moisturizes the air taken by inhalation. When there is a curvature in the nasal septum, the air taken from a nostril decreases and airway resistance increases. In this case, it may be necessary to take air from the mouth since sufficient air cannot be taken through the nose. Apart from these, headaches and nosebleeds can also be seen due to the curvature of the nasal septum. When the curved areas in the septum are removed with the septoplasty operation, air will be able to be taken from both nostrils. Nasal functions are very important for preventing recurrent upper respiratory tract infections and lung health as well as meaningful for a quality sleep.
Septoplasty Operation + Turbinate Radiofrequency - Before and 1 week after |
Positive Health Effects of Septoplasty Operation In the picture above, there are photos showing the intra-nasal endoscopic view of the patient who underwent septoplasty operation + turbinate readiofrequeency reduction before and after the operation. It is seen that the air hole can be seen more easily after the operation and the curvatures in the nasal septum have disappeared.
In patients with nasal septum deviation and planned septoplasty operation, when there are complaints such as recurrent sinusitis attacks, nasal polyps and nosebleeds, it may be beneficial to have computed paranasal sinus tomography performed before surgery when there is a history of previous nasal surgery or trauma. All sinuses, opening ways of sinuses, intranasal masses, nasal concha, nasal polyps can be evaluated in images obtained by computed tomography. Tomography is not a correct application only in simple upper respiratory tract infections. It is more appropriate to request especially in patients who are planned to have intranasal surgery and who have various complaints about the nose despite medical treatment.
Bone spur formation - Nasal Septum deviation - Headache |
Above is the image obtained from paranasal sinus tomography of a patient suffering from headache and nasal congestion. It is seen that the nasal septum of the patient is curved to the right and is in contact with the nasal concha. When the cartilage curvatures in the nose are severe, it may contact the nasal concha and cause headache and nasal bleeding (link for detailed information >> Nasal Bone Spur - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment). After the septoplasty operation, all complaints of the patient disappeared.
